Now I know why modern writers about birds quote Forbush. I, too, love how the man writes, how he brings the critters alive. For example, my folks here have a red-eyed vireo in the backyard. And Forbush's essay makes it seem as if the author is sitting out on the deck with us, listening to it sing all bloody afternoon.... And seeing as this book is, effectively, an historic document, being almost a C. old, we can learn other things... like a more recent perspective on the extinction of the show more ivory-billed woodpecker, and that the primary name for the Peregrine Falcon was "duck hawk," apparently in an attempt to distinguish it from the European peregrine, which was thought to be different.

The paintings are wonderful, too.

I sure do want to read, or own, more Forbush someday somehow.

Average, dated text, but 5 stars for the beautiful plates by Brooks, Fuertes and the young Roger Tory Peterson.
