Ostensibly set in El Escorial, this one-act play feels very expressionist: a grotesque King, almost baying at his hounds to be quiet, engages in a testy dialogue with his scruffy Fool, and we get to witness their recalcitrant tug of war.

It’s gloomy, grotesque, and I really want to see it performed now. Two thumbs up!
Lush, medieval, sickly ripe with imagery of folk-Catholicism, blood, plague and haunted by death, cruelty and despair. Ghelderode is cast in with Beckett and Ionesco as an "absurdist" - but he also brings to mind the works of Huysmans, Rodenbach, Holbein, Rops and the grotesquerie of the kermesse.

"Spells by Michel de Ghelderode offers a collection of stories both beautiful and loathsome. He represents literature that must be wrestled with to fully appreciate. . . . [it] is literature distilled from despair, nostalgia, and sickness.”
