What a wonderfully beautiful and heart-wrenching book! Even though I've seen stuff about the bombs, this book added more context. I also loved reading about the Holy Man Nagai! It almost felt as if Midori gave him her spirit, like Elijah to Elisha. I also see how he was like the apocalyptic Francis.
I blame the publishers, as I am certain the subtitle "Reflections on Modern Miracles" was not the author's creation. But I was disappointed by the book because I expected it to be more reflective. "Narratives of Modern Miracles" would have been more accurate, although a fair few took place during the 19th century, which doesn't seem as modern as it used to. It's a well written introduction to Lourdes with a nod to other miraculous pilgrimage sites, filled with well-attested stories of cures. show more In the last couple of chapters, Fr Glynn does get a bit reflective but it was too little and too late for this reader. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to read about Lourdes (there is only one chapter concerning Knock and one concerning Fatima), St Bernadette, and miraculous cures. show less
Excellent read regarding one man's struggle to survive and thrive after the nuclear bombing of Nagasaki. Nicely written, providing some new insights on the effects of anuclear detonation and its aftermath and how one man held no grudge but lived to assist others.

I was very impressed with this book, which I just happened to pick up because it looked interesting. In addition to discovering the story of Dr. Nagai's life as a physician, research scientist, author and Catholic convert, I discovered the story of Nagasaki, Japan and particularly the history of the Catholic community there. I was especially inspired to see to what efforts Dr. Nagai put his life after the dropping of the Atomic Bomb on Nagasaki at the end of World War II and would recommend show more this book. show less
