- Gladys Malvern was born in New Jersey. She and her younger sister Corinne had a peripatetic childhood with their mother, Cora, a theatrical wardrobe keeper. They became actors as small children and by their teens were performing in traveling vaudeville shows and working in the growing New York movie industry. In the early 1920s, they gave up acting. Gladys worked for advertising agencies for a dozen years, and then sold her first novel for young adults. She became a prolific author, producing more than 45 books as well as short stories and radio scripts over a nearly 30-year career. Many of her books were historical novels or biographies. She collaborated with her sister, who had become a commercial artist, on a number of books, including the award-winning Valiant Minstrel (1943), a biography of Sir Harry Lauder. After her death, her titles went out of print until 2011, when several were reissued by Special Edition Books.

Children's book (late grade school) that tells the story of Rhoda, a young Jewish teen who had been raised primarily by her grandmother in Cyprus. Upon her grandmother's death she is sent to join her mother, brother, and Uncle in Jerusalem. She is shocked to discover them to be not at all as she remembered them. They have given up all their riches and fine living and have joined a cult (early Christianity).
The son of the High Priest solicits Rhoda's hand in marriage and with great show more reluctance her Uncle allows it because Rhoda desires it very much. The young girl is anxious to return to the sort of life she was accustomed to living.
In the course of the long engagement however, she learns to appreciate the life her family has chosen and realizes that she cannot marry her fiance after all, but to break off an engagement is not possible... show less

This was a great introduction to the Reformation period of history. Recommended by Carole Joy Seid. Well written and enjoyed by my teen boys (I used something to disguise the cover as the faces of the wives is on the cover - not appealing to young men) - they enjoyed reading about Henry VIII. When you hear "keep reading", you know it's a keeper.
Will try to find other resources by Malvern.

This has been one of my all time favorits. I can't tell you how many times that I have read this book. Love the story of Esther and her bravery to save her people and us. Gladys Malvern has writen a beautiful story.
This is a very sweet telling of the story of Ruth. It is worth the read!
