What If . . .: A Lifetime of Questions, Speculations, Reasonable Guesses, and a Few Things I Know for Sure by Shirley MacLaine
I'd liken reading this book to eating a box of Harry Potter's every-flavor beans. Some of the questions are deliciously thought provoking, some are like black licorice- maybe you like it maybe you don't, and then there are the vomit and ear wax flavors that make you want to stay away forever. It was worth reading for the few gems scattered throughout but ultimately not for me.

It's kind of amazing that Shirl is still plugging away at both acting and her New Age writing career in her 90's. What it suggests is that she's doing something right. Some of her ideas are obviously far-fetched to a lot of people. Others may say she just stole them. But I think her intentions are honorable. It's not like she really needs any more fame or money at this point. She's basically been taking a heavy dose of ridicule for more than half her life now, but a lot of ideas that she was show more pushing in the 70's, like balancing the chakras, have become fairly mainstream at this point. whatever you may think, she always writes in a way that's biting and amusing and this one is no different. I hope that the film that she is writing about making eventually sees the light of day. Aside from all the stuff about Atlantis and the Canary Islands, this is a fantastic book about the perils of indie filmmaking in this day and age. show less
