- Coral Lorenzen was born in Hillsdale Wisconsin. After graduating from high school in the spring of 1941, she held a number of jobs, including proofreader and newspaper reporter. During World War II, she worked as a lathe machinist and shipfitter. In 1952, she and her husband Jim Lorenzen founded the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization (APRO) for amateur research on UFOs (unidentified flying objects). A few months later, Coral and others across Door County, Wisconsin witnessed what came to be known as the Sturgeon Bay Flying Saucer. She and her husband wrote several popular books together.
