Chapters on ten of the commonest birds that visit backyards and bird feeders are a welcome supplement to the few sentences in field guides. The eleventh chapter gives such a hurried overview of all the rest of the birds that visit us that it adds only a little to the field guides' coverage. But it does add some information. An appendix on food and habitat preferences, a glossary, a bibliography, and an index make the book even more useful.
The ten birds that the book treats thoroughly are: show more the American robin, the black-capped chickadee, the northern cardinal, the mockingbird, mourning dove, house wren, goldfinch, nuthatch, downy woodpecker, and bluejay. All but one of these are found in our Ontario backyard. show less

Funny as well as informative
Model wildlife habitat attracts wild behavior.

Author George H. Harrison is a lifelong nature observer who used his experience from his work with the National Wildlife Federation and as editor at “National Wildlife” to author several award winning wildlife articles. In this book, he takes a close look at the repercussions owners suffer when unwelcome guests of the fur-bearing variety visit their homes, lawns, and property. Harrison’s practical tips and inventions will help show more discourage squirrels, deer, rabbits, skunks, and other less desirable wildlife from taking up permanent residence. Ranging from inexpensive homemade to store bought devices, it is a battle of wits between invader and homeowner. If the reader doesn’t find the battles humorous, at least the reader will know they have some options to try when the varmints come calling. show less
