Even knowing that most of the deaths in this story arc get retconned (and having previously read many of said returns) the writing and art styles make the losses heart wrenching and worth the read.

At times I almost wished the characters in question had stayed dead, so powerful was their send off.

I read this book for one reason and one reason only: because Cable makes a pun about having an evil clone. And, honestly? That was literally the only good thing about this story. Sure, it set up a lot of things that came after it throughout the 90s right up until Grant Morrison took over with New X-Men 114 in the early 00's but on its own NOTHING HAPPENS!!! For 12 issues everyone just sort of faps about and then it's over. That said, it's a really great pun.

The first three issues of this reboot are five star material....Scott Lobdell blew me away with his work on this title (and Alan Davis is always amazing) and it has always bothered me that this team only did three issues. I would have loved to see them get a longer run on this comic. Once they leave Chris Claremont moves in, and while this isn't nearly as bad as his later work on the X-Men, it still does have the same stylistic excesses that make his work in this time period difficult to show more read. Plus, he drags over as many of his supporting X-Men characters as he can, and they seem awkward and off putting in the FF. show less

I've heard that Age of Apocalypse Book 1 is a selection of unimportant side stories that serves as a poor introduction to this fan favorite alternate universe storyline, but that's not the real problem; more importantly, it's badly written and badly drawn, suffering from clumsy exposition, adolescent melodrama, a bland setting, thin characters, confusing action, clichéd plots, and bloated scale.

As an inexperienced reader of Marvel comics, I'll just assume that this is not representative show more quality and pretend that I never came across it, lest I lose interest in the X-Men altogether. show less
