One thing that they bring out is this: in the popular imagination, the 1940s are synonymous with the Second World War - yet in fact, that war only occupied the first half of the decade (although its impact on what followed cannot be underestimated). The images in this book are pretty interesting, but it would have been more interesting if there was more text accompanying each image so that you could learn more about the historical, political and social context.
