An imagined tale of a mother of three girls the author adopted. Fictionalized story of the mother of three korean adoptee girls. A simple orphan girl, in postwar Korea (mid-late 1950s) works in a gourd shop. Has an abusive boyfriend who also beats his wife, and eventually marries him, since she is downtrodden, simple and without other options. Grandmother is the strongest influence but is old and ill, and gives up kids at the end.
