21 Grams is a hard film to like. The first half hour or so is inaccessible and at points the editing leaves one bewildered. You are buffeted between stories at an incredibly fast pace. I'm just about to learn about Jack Jordan's faith then I'm suddenly thrown into Paul Rivers's marital strife. At times this works well, there is a fluidity to it that makes sense, those events are actually taking place in the same time frame. But, ah! the time frames! At times the cutting between them is show more bewildering, the editing cleverly disguises what the storyline really is. show less
Personal riches and success is not something that can take place actual progress in dismantalling systematc oppression and this book beautifully starts a discussion on this.

Something rf kuang knows how to do is get you to fall in love with some characters and their friendship another thing she knows how to do is completely and utterly destroy those characters and that friendship. She hints at flaws in these characters and those shines a beacon in those flaws as the book get gets closer to show more its end. And don’t get me started on the end Jesus I was not ready!! That end quite literally broke my soul in half and threw it away and then went back and stomped on it for good measure. Rf kuang is one of those authors that I don’t need to know what the books about if she wrote I’ll read and I know it’s gonna be phenomenal  show less
An actor who used to play a superhero produces a crappy Broadway play.

For a movie that has so much to say to criticize the artlessness of Hollywood movies, it has very little to offer itself. The characters are cliches, with no development worth mentioning. The big dramatic moments have no emotional weight. And, despite being advertised as a comedy and having a very funny cast, it has less humor than most good dramas. The One Long Take gimick would be pretty cool and impressive if this were show more a suspense film. In a comedy, it's a disaster. And a two hour drum solo? My head still hurts.

I was expecting Adult fiction, but this is YA, and at times feels like it could be Harry Potter fanfiction. An interesting idea and subject, but let down by its adherence to 2 dimensions, in character, and in plot. Lots of aspects that could have been incorporated to create a more nuanced world.
