Classic horror movie, basically a haunted house flick set on a spaceship--a creepy, slimey, don't-go-looking-for-the-cat spaceship. As with many great monster movies, you don't really get a good look at the beast...until it's too damned late. Best new monster in ages.
B (Good).
A boy and a princess try to save the last unicorns.
It's a 90 minute music video. It's not objectively good, but its a particular sort of dreamy atmospheric, which is pretty enjoyable if you go into it in the right mood (and as long as you're watching the short, Tangerine Dream version).

An ex-cop is forced to hunt down a group of androids.
Great concept, but the movie is all atmosphere and relatively little story. There's a hell of a lot of great atmosphere, though. The theatrical cut is much better than the director's cut; the voice overs might be corny, but a little iconic corniness is just what this movie needs. It takes itself way too seriously otherwise. And while it's possible to follow the plot without the voice overs, it's not easy, and this story isn't nearly show more complex enough to justify having a hard time following it (although if you've only ever seen the director's cut, you might think it is complex). show less

An astronaut is stranded on Mars.
They would have had to have messed this up pretty badly for me not to love it. They did not. It's faithful to the book, only simplifying or cutting things out for time. The book is much more effective, though (although maybe that's just because I didn't know what was going to happen). I really hope this new trend of science fiction movies that are actually science fiction keeps up.
