A very good introduction to the building of Gothic cathedral in medieval Western Europe. Scott brings a sense of the sacred to his "enterprise." Scott weaves together the history, the religious background, the medieval culture, and the technical abilities that brought about some of the grandest buidlings in Europe. He spends quite a bit of time explaining the construction of the Abbey Church of St. Denis, north of Paris and with Salisbury Cathedral: St. Denis because it was the first truy show more Gothic edifice built, and Salisbury because he had unique access to people who could help with his writing. Winchester, Canterbury, and Chartres Cathedrals are also at the top of his list. show less
