Heiner Müller (1) (1929–1995)

Heiner Müller's plays as in Hamletmachine are postmodern and just plain weird. I really don't know how else to describe them, except, perhaps, disturbing? Because they're that, too.

All the works within this book are probably better experience in a theatrical setting, rather than read from a book. At least "Hamletmachine" deconstructs and twists "Hamlet," so that it isn't a totally foreign and bizarre construct. I mean to say, knowledge of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" allows "Hamletmachine" to show more make ever so much more sense by grounding it in something known.

I would recommend this to fans of postmodern theatre and/or fans of German theatre from the 20th century, but probably not to very many others. show less
