This is the best book nobody's ever heard of.

Anne de Vries, a Dutch novelist, was asked to write a book to commemorate the years of Nazi occupation. The result was a beauty of a work, much liked (as I hear) in its home country. Unfortunately, the only translation--by Harry der Nederlanden--is slightly stiff.

As German troops roll into Holland, the de Boer family resign themselves to living under the invader. Soon, of course, they are drawn into the underground resistance. I won't give away show more much more, except that it's a thoughtful, exciting, moving book.

Watch out for a few fictionalised nods to famous Resistance heroes--including the ten Booms!

By The Writer himself:

Bartje I wrote from my childhood feelings, combined with my studies and experience as a schoolmaster. Bartje wants to be a cry for honesty in education, sincerity and disinterestedness towards the child, who wants to see us in a comrade and to feel deceived by us every time. The book wants to show how the child has to develop the same vices and the same wiles and troughs that we as big people always have to fight with.

AdV:
