I take a fool's pride in being able to follow the main mystery plot. I never could understand why the cop found the prosecutor's request so morally repugnant. I heard a character on a television show claim that Hamlet was bascially five soliquoies. I think this film is four superb action sequences: a bloody murder, two chases on foot, and the great car chase.
Film goes on a bit too long, especially at the end, but McQueen holds it together as a cop who puts actions ahead of words. Good cast of familiar faces and of course, the famous car chase. Tarantino dissects it quite well in his Cinema Speculation.
A dying Shakespearian actor disappoints everyone in the end. A life-time performance from Albert Finney. Interesting to think of finney playing the part of tom jones as you watch this movie.
Very few movies are as cool as this one.
One of the greatest car chase scenes in cinema.

The 2-disc dvd has a great special features section, including an excellent documentary on movie editing.
