The falcon's part of this story soars above the human plots, which involve some stereotypic characterizations. These are surpassed by Harrison's exquisite prose in the falcon passages, which make the story overall quite reqarding. I read this several years ago and vividly recall the pleasure.
An absolutely compelling book- both the writing and the story itself. It connects the fishing-community's divergent priorities along with anything but "still water"- full of bluefin tuna and orcas. Definitely worth your time.
A touching story of renewal, healing of raw feelings for a number of people. Woven through the interesting exploration of tending and training a gyrfalcon that has been shot to enable its recovery and eventual release back into the wild. Only jarring piece was the shot that killed the man trying to cause the trainer to fall from the cliffs. But a tidy clearing up of the drama.
The writing is excellent, but the plot was pretty formulaic and predictable.
