About the Author

Archimedes was a mathematician and inventor, born in Syracuse, Sicily, about 287 B.C. He became famous for his law of the lever and for inventing the catapult, parabolic mirror, and the mechanical crane that was capable of capsizing a ship by overturning it. These inventions were designed to defend show more Syracuse during the Second Punic War, which were waged between Rome and Carthage. While Archimedes made fundamental contributions to physics, his greatest contributions were to theoretical mathematics. Some of his works have come down to us. When Syracuse was taken in 212 B.C., Archimedes was killed by the Roman soldiers, being at the time intent upon a mathematical problem. show less

What an interesting read. A fable told like it was real (and convincingly so if the other reviews are to be believed).
A wonderful tale of overcoming ordeal and adversity - I don't think I could last over 200 at sea in a life boat - with it without a Bengal Tiger.
It could be a hard or difficult read the first person style seems to jump from author to Pi and back without any indication of who is talking however after a while you begin to understand and can easily slip from one to the other. show more
I do want to see the movie adaptation now I have read the book.
A great piece of modern fantasy or should that be fable? Or something else.
God plays a big part in this story as well which is I believe the main intention of the author, to me however, I enjoyed the fantastic elements - the story builds and grow on you. I had to finish it I had to know what happened next. I read it at lunch today and again now in the evening just to get it done. Sign of a good book.

friend, canst thou analyse this in thy mind,
and of these masses all the measures find,
go forth in glory! be assured all deem
thy wisdom in this discipline supreme!
L'Edició d'aquesta obra és simplement magnífica, Ramon Masià Fornos és matemàtic i filòleg clàssic i ha fet un treball digne de menció, tan la traducció con els dibuixos són clar i ben fets, només cal felicitar-lo.
