I started this book twice and was not able to finish it either time (though I got as far as 1/3 the second time). Stories about terrible people being terrible hold very little interest for me. This is not to say I want Pollyanna characters in the stories I read: far from it. Flawed characters are great, but I draw a line at bigotry on every page. Seriously, this book is incredibly full of sexism, ablism, and racism. Yes, one character in particular is called out as being especially terrible, show more but our POV character is just as bad. Given that the tone of this book is anti-PC culture, I can only imagine that this was written for an audience of Fox News fans in mind. If you enjoy hatefulness and hateful people, then by all means, read this book. Otherwise, don’t waste your time. show less

I devoured this book like a chocolate drenched sundae! I went in not expecting much, I would suggest a definate change to the cover art, as yes, we do judge a book by its cover, even when its delivered over an electronic device. I was so surprised at how much I loved this book, and shocked that this was a first novel. I would liken his writing style to an edgier John Irving. The antics of the family in the book were highly entertaining and entirely believable, perhaps because I come from a show more nutty family as well. I look forward to the next book!! show less

When I first started reading this book, I was sure that I would hate it. The protagonist goes for easy targets: bra-free women, vegans, the morbidly obese, the poor... I thought that I'd want to stop but the writing style kept me in, as well as the mystery.

The ending basically rocked my world. I won't give it away, but let's just say that point of view really, really matters. I highly enjoyed this book and was never bored at any point during my reading.

This book simply met one of my most important reading wishes - to laugh out loud in public places while reading a funny book. I couldn't help it. I think the concept was original, the characters were hilarous and while a little extreme, real enough to remind us all of someone. The pace was good and it was coherent and smooth. I will definitely read jeff Kay's next novel. My only wish in his next novel is to lay off just a little on the narrator - the narrator was very dominating and his show more voice was a little to heavy - it wasn't necessary for the humor for him to lay it on so thick. And I didn't really feel like I learned enough about the narrator and who he was. pretty late in the book I was surprised about other people's impressions about him, and i think that was because I didn't really see the narrator through anyone else's eyes, or even the narrator's own self-perceptions. But that's for next time and for this one I just say keep on going, looking forward to the next. show less
