Resuming her career in 1921 after the birth of her three children, she designed needlework patterns for a wide variety of publications, eventually founding the McKim Studios with her husband. 101 Patchwork Patterns: Quilt Name Stories, Cutting Designs, Material Suggestions, Yardage Estimates, Definite Instructions for Every Step of Quilt Making by Ruby Short McKim
Ruby McKim was one of several designers who published quilt patterns in newspapers in the 1930s and beyond. I don't particularly care for 1930s quilts, but I purchased this one at a time when not much was available. McKim used some traditional patterns, often renaming them arbitrarily. Her original designs included applique and some highly impractical pieced designs.
The patterns are seriously deficient when compared to modern quilt patterns. All are based on the time consuming template show more method, and they aren't always accurate. McKim often modified the pattern pieces to make them fit into the allocated column space, without indicating the change in scale. Anyone wanting to actually use these patterns should draft new templates, using the illustrations as a guideline. show less

the first quilt book I ever purchased. This is a classic by Ruby Short McKim. Excellent basic quilt book with popular, well-known patterns.
