An objective look at the natural history and population of lion and cheetah in India by Valmik Thapar, the doyen of wildlife experts in India, and two others. I got this book principally in the context of the recent introduction of a few cheetahs in central India (Kuno forest), as it has been of the view of many wildlifers that it is a very questionable project with little chances of long-term success. Valmik seems to generally confirm that the cheetah (and perhaps also the lion) has been show more artificially maintained in medieval times by continuous imports from Africa, and was not a part of India's native fauna. Without stating it in so many words, he seems to be sceptical about the cheetah revival project in India. A useful book, with sizeable excerpts from old books and papers about the lion and the cheetah in India. show less
a beautiful book. basically just a wildlife survey of India and the surrounding areas, but all encompassing. Enjoyed the fact that the author provided descriptions from different authors through history as well as his own experienes
This excellent book about tigers in India follows the lives of three tigresses and their families, from the birth of the cubs through all stages of their development until they are fully grown and independent. Tigers: the Secret Life is full of fascinating and detailed information about tiger habitat, their hunting methods, impact on other wildlife, interactions with local villagers, and especially the daily habits and intimate social life of the great striped cats. In the course of his show more studies, Thapar discovered not only new info on how tigresses teach their young, but that male tigers can co-exist peacefully with the cubs and share in family duties. The book is written in an easy, storytelling style that makes it a pleasure to read, and the photographs are absolutely stunning.
