Rather like a history sourcebook—for a VERY broad class—the book is a compendium of historical texts, including letters, diaries, and published stories. I didn’t read it word for word, of course, but flipped through reading the sections I found most interesting. There’s not enough depth on any one thing to leave a strong impression, but many of the entries are compelling. Some are disturbing, of course—our nation’s history was pretty ugly in places. Others were amusing or hopeful.
