The prose is pedestrian, and the maps are sadly monochrome and second rate for legability. The material of the text is quite clear, but the footnotes, while at the bottom of the page, a plus in my opinion, are often in their original language, Latin, Greek, italian, etc. This hampers the general reader, like myself. However, this remains one of the standard texts in this rather obscure field. A necessary book, but not a delight!
