I'm officially in love with Cindy Gerard! Okay, maybe I'm ore in love with her series and her characters. I think I want to marry every single one of her male heroes, lol.
This second book was on par with the first, [b:Show No Mercy|2258548|Show No Mercy (Black Ops, #1)|Cindy Gerard|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1255652485s/2258548.jpg|2264498], and so far it's two for two. This is Sam's story and it starts off with a bang. When Sam gets too close to his target, the German mad man Nader, show more he sends Sam a message to back off in the form of a car bomb that kills his sister and brother-in-law. Riddled with grief and guilt, Sam leaves Black Ops Inc. to take care of his family. When Reed shows up with information about Nader and his whereabouts, Sam can't resist going back one more time for the ultimate retribution. Their only trail leading to Nader is one of his low-level mules, Cory Hughes. Since Cory is somewhere in Honduras, they focus on Cory's sister, Abbie who they think is involved in her brother's shady dealings. Determined to get some answers about Cory's whereabouts, Sam woos her to get information out of her. He feels guilty about tricking her, and after a night of passion, he finds suspicious packages in her garage, all of them from Cory and all of them from Honduras. To Sam and his team, she appears to be guilty. When Abbie finally realizes she's been played, she's devastated, but she doesn't have time to dwell on that. She receives an email with a picture of her tortured brother and instructions that she's to give up information on the location of a stolen diamond necklace that Cory conveniently mailed back to the US.
Abbie turns the tables on Sam and his team. She holds the cards to get her brother back and for Sam to nail Nader to the wall. And so ensues the dangerous rescue operation.
I love Ms Gerard's series because she not only writes some seriously hot passion that can set the pages aflame, but the passion doesn't dominate the plot. I feel like she has a good bead on what Spec Ops entails and she's very descriptive. The male heroes are all larger than life, all of them deal with nightmares and demons as a result of their profession. So far this series has made me bite nails, cry, laugh and swoon. I can't wait to read the next one and do some more swooning. show less
This review was originally posted on my blog.
A sizzling, sexy, heart-thumping, action-packed, knuckle-biting story from one of the best writers of romantic suspense. As a fan of her other series with the same attributes, Bodyguards and Black Ops Inc., this first book in her new series is everything I expected it would be, and maybe a little more. Cindy Gerard delivers sexy hot heroes who deal with danger easily and efficiently, and heroines who are their equal in many ways, and bring about a show more sense of calm in the chaos. It's hard not to fall in love with her characters because they're perfect as much as they are flawed. We cheer for them, we cry for them, and for a short period of time, they're all ours to enjoy.
You don't have to have read the other series in order to jump into this book and understand who is who or what they do, but it might help. There are familiar names and faces that pop up – to my utter delight, Gabe makes quite a few appearances in this book. If you don't know who Gabe is, Gabriel 'Archangel' Jones, read his story in Show No Mercy (Black Ops Inc. #1).
The blurb (taken from Goodreads) sums up the book perfectly, so I'll just dive into my review. This book started of really strong and just kept going, and going, and going. I absolutely love strong heroines who have a bit of Lara Croft in them – I mean the kicking butt and handling guns like a pro. If that isn't enough to turn on a Spec Ops soldier then what is?
Even though Mike and Eva get off to a rather rough start, their chemistry is undeniable and a constant source of hot looks and quite a few hilarious dialogs. Mike is cheeky, cocky, and a smarta$$, and I loved him for it. But Eva can give it back just as good, and she does. Quite often.
There were so many great moments of comedic relief during tense moments.
I guess they even rubbed off on Gabe, or marriage has mellowed him out because even got in on it at least once. My point is, you feel like you're there and a part of the moment.
Where this story really shines is the plot. What starts out as a mission to unearth the truth of what really happened in Afghanistan all those years ago, and clear Mike's name; it turns out there is so much more at stake – together they infiltrate a terrorist camp disguised as a cult, Eva learns a painful truth, Mike learns an awful betrayal, but gains the trust back of two brothers in arms, and somewhere along the way, Eva and Mike both discover love and trust. I couldn't put this book down once I got started. If this is any indication of how the rest of the series will go, I will undoubtedly be devouring every single one of them. This series is not to be missed if you love military heroes and strong, compelling plots. I most definitely and highly recommend this book, or any book penned by the brilliant Cindy Gerard.

"I've been out of it for eight years, thank you very much."
"No, you've been hiding out. Big difference. Grow a pair, Brown. It's past time."
He opened his mouth. Shut it. Whipped his head toward the opposite window and clamped his fingers around his thighs to keep from clamping them around her throat.
There were so many great moments of comedic relief during tense moments.
He groped around in the dark and finally found his pants, dragged them on, then walked quietly out of the room. Once outside, he leaned back against the door, made a gun out of his index finger and thumb, pointed it at his temple, and pulled the trigger.
She scowled. “What did you expect? That I'd fall apart and start crying for my mommy?”
Actually I thought I might do that. I still might. Hold me?”
I guess they even rubbed off on Gabe, or marriage has mellowed him out because even got in on it at least once. My point is, you feel like you're there and a part of the moment.

Twelve years ago two young agents, best friends and brothers in arms, waltzed into Sophie's Spanish class. They each fell for the girl, and she for them. However, Sophie ended up marrying one of them, leaving the other to pine for her for twelve years. Fast forward to the present, Sophie is divorced and she's a school teacher in El Salvador. One day, Sophie's daughter, Hope, is nearly a target of a kidnapping. Instead of Hope, her best friend Lola is taken. Sophie can't reach her ex-husband show more so instead she calls Wyatt "Papa Bear" Savage for help.
Wyatt fell in love with Sophie all those years ago, but stepped aside when his best friend ended up getting the girl and marrying her. When Sophie calls him out of the blue requesting his help, he doesn't hesitate to go to her. The search for the missing girl thrusts the two of them together and forces them to face the truth about their feelings while racing against the clock to save Lola from the clutches of the notorious gang, MS-13.
Wyatt lived up to his Papa Bear nickname. He was so sweet and conflicted about being in love with his best friend's wife. I didn't warm up to Sophie until near the end. She wasn't the kick-ass heroine like all the others before her, nor did she seem to know her real feelings until the very end, which made me feel sad for Wyatt. I got the feeling that she did her fair share of jerking him around because she has always been aware of his feelings for her. Things get awkward when Hugh finally shows up. I just didn't see what made her so special that she had three men panting after her in this story. Anyway, the ending had a surprising twist that I never saw coming, and I do love a good shock. I also loved the glimpses into all the other couples' lives (Gabe and Sam *swoon*) and there's finally a conclusion to the Nate and Juliana saga, lol.
Another solid read. Five for five. show less

Similar premise to Kill Me Twice by Roxanne St.Claire but the focus is more on the romance and less on the suspense.
While the stalker plot is decent and has some disturbing moments, the seriousness of the threat lacks substance and the action is subdued. Although the climax is exciting and the resolution satisfying, the numerous red herrings and lack of sufficient clues make it difficult to pinpoint the culprit - I had it narrowed down to two and it turned out to be show more neither, which caught me by surprise (in a good way).
The romance is the real highlight. Jillian and Nolan have tangible chemistry and the build up of sexual tension is slow and intense, and contributes to their increasing emotional bond so that the eventual "I love yous" are completely believable and not based solely on sex.
The characters are well-developed and compelling. Nolan is a complex and realistic hero. Recurring episodes of PTSD and feelings of guilt following his experiences as a Ranger make it difficult for him to reconnect with civilian life until Jillian forces him to acknowledge that some things are worth fighting for. Jillian is a very likeable heroine - she is down to earth despite her wealthy background and, if anything, cares too much about people. She is smart and stubborn but knows her limitations and, thankfully, has no TSTL moments.
Nolan's family are endearing and I look forward to continuing with the series, which focuses on the rest of the Garrett siblings. show less
