About the Author

The prolific Belgian-born writer Georges Simenon produced hundreds of fictional works under his own name and 17 pseudonyms, in addition to more than 70 books about Inspector Maigret, long "the favorite sleuth of highbrow detective-story readers" (SR). More than 50 "Simenons" have been made into show more films. In addition to his mystery stories, he wrote what he called "hard" books, the serious psychological novels numbering well over 100. The autobiographical Pedigree, set in his native town of Liege, is perhaps his finest work. The publication of Simenon's intimate memoirs also attracted considerable attention. Simenon himself once said that he would never write a "great novel." Yet Gide called him "a great novelist, perhaps the greatest and truest novelist we have in French literature today," and Thornton Wilder (see Vol. 1) found that Simenon's narrative gift extends "to the tips of his fingers." The following are some of Simenon's novels, exclusive of the Maigret detective stories, that are in print. (Bowker Author Biography) Georges Simenon was born on February 13, 1903 in Liege, Belgium. He wrote more than 200 fiction works under 16 different pseudonyms. His first book, The Case of Peter the Lent led to 80 more of the like including the main character, Inspector Maigret. He published over 400 books that were translated into 50 different languages and sold by the millions. He also wrote psychological novels, including The Man Who Watched the Train Go By. He died on September 4, 1989 in Lausanne. (Bowker Author Biography) show less

Short biography
Georges Simenon was born at Liege in Belgium in 1903. At sixteen he began work as a journalist on the Gazette de Liege. He has published 158 books, many of them psychological novels and others in the Inspector Maigret series, and his work has been admired by almost all the leading French and English critics. His books have been translated into twenty-three languages and forty-four of them have been filmed; his psychological novels have had a great influence on the French cinema. He has travelled all over the world, and at one time lived on a cutter making long journeys of exploration round the coasts of Northern Europe. He is married and has three children. His recreations are riding, fishing, and golf. Taken from 1959 Penguin book jacket of My Friend Maigret.

After he moved to the USA, Simenon seems to have had a phase of uncharacteristic uncertainty about what to do with his most popular character. Should he remain in 1930s Paris where he seemed most at home, should he move forward to the new postwar era, or was it time to Reichenbach him? A good fallback in that kind of situation is always to give him a prequel and use it to tinker with the back-story a bit, so in this book, Simenon takes us back to 1913, with the young Jules Maigret newly show more married and recently promoted the detective branch of the police. Which is interesting, because up to now we have been allowed to assume he was in his sixties in the mid-1930s. Simenon has quietly made him young enough to carry on working well into the 1950s!
A musician on his way from work late at night is caught up in a disturbance at the home of the wealthy Balthazar family, and the young detective Maigret is on duty when he reports it at the local police station. The family deny all knowledge when he goes to check it out but the musician is a credible witness and there are all sorts of inconsistencies in what the family tell him, so there seems to be a case to investigate. Maigret’s boss recuses himself on the grounds that the Balthazars are friends of his wife, so Maigret gets the chance of his first independent investigation. Of course there is more to it than that, and Maigret has to learn some hard lessons about the reality of police work…
A fun little diversion, full of interesting period detail and not unduly laden with “little did he know that a few years on he would be in charge at the Quai d’Orsay…” stuff. Disappointing to discover that Mme Maigret was never young and frivolous, though…

Maigret is feeling old - he has only 2 years until his retirement and even though initially he was very enthusiastic about the future, these days he would rather stay and work longer. The novel gets its main feeling from that mood - it is melancholic and steeped into the past. The murder victim adds to that mood - the oldest brother in once affluent family, with a family trying to keep their business and their good name afloat with any means necessary. These days all they have is the show more business, which makes no money and requires additional funds to be added monthly, a house which is about to fall down around them and their name - which appears to be their only read currency.

When a family member dies, you would expect that the family will do all they can to assist the investigation. And yet, the Lachaumes refuse to answer any question they do not deem strictly necessary and even call a lawyer to assist them. The surviving brother, the elderly parents, the sister-in-law and even the very old maid - they all seem to be hiding something. And then there is the son of the murdered man - a 12 years old boy which get spirited away to school and turned into a boarder there thus making it very hard for the police to even see him, let alone talk to him.

To add to the frustrations of the case the old examining magistrate Judge Coméliau had retired and Maigret's is stuck with a new one, Angelot, who wants to do things his own way and throws our detective out of his game. The new way is supposedly by the book and yet, Angelot somehow decides not to disclose a personal connection in the case. Simenon never comments on it, neither does Maigret - but it is left there for the reader to ponder at and evaluate the "new" and "old" ways.

As usual, to figure out the murder, Maigret needs to figure out everyone's history and with noone willing to talk, he has to rely on other means and other people's ideas about the family. The story that starts to emerge is tragic and shows not only the moral corruption of the once powerful family but also the ability of people to ignore what they are seeing for the sake of proprietary and the past. By the end, when we finally learn who the killer is and why Léonard dies, one wonders who they should reserve the sympathy for - the dead man or the killer. Mine went to the latter.

It is a slow and calm novel, dealing with the past as much as it deals with the present and Maigret's issues with the new magistrate and with the impeding retirement (both indicating change - the thing he really is afraid of - in case one does not pick on that earlier, his reminiscence about his old heater which was taken away from him should really make you realize it) take as much of a central role as the murder mystery. It is probably not a good novel to start with if you never read the series before but it is a decent entry in the series.

Reader, you are not here to “figure it out.”

The continual suspense and tension that Simenon is able to maintain throughout this novel is ingenious. There are scenes that are perfect because Simenon gives barely enough detail to make anything sensible and the reader’s imagination and “faith-in-author” do the rest to make the scenes as taut and intense as he wants. This is such a crazy experience since, as we all know, Simenon’s writing is spare, somewhat choppy, and quite show more speedy.

The chapters in Coupole are amazingly written – I was there: in the scene. I can vouch for the beads of sweat on Maigret’s forehead. I could smell the olives and the apéritifs as the revolving door kept opening and closing bringing refreshing yet chilling bursts of autumn air. It nearly has me wanting to go for brunch right this moment…….

This is a dark read. It turns into the examination of a psychologically-twisted criminal who gets his ending. It makes all of us so very glad that Inspector Maigret is around to keep us safe. There are plenty detective stories and mystery novels to read if a reader is so inclined to chase clues and get stumped by red herrings. This novel is not of that ilk. Instead, this novel is for readers who want to be drawn into scenes, who aware that for as much is said much goes unsaid, and to be surrounded in Maigret’s pipe-smoke. Another strong candidate for re-reading.

If you’re like me, perhaps you’ve felt the same curiosity when, driving through a huddle of buildings at an isolated country crossroads, you wonder about the lives you’ve just passed through at a sensible twenty miles per hour. You’ll never know what small but intense dramas play out behind the closed doors receding into your rearview mirror and soon enough out of your memory.

Such a crossroads stands at the center of Georges Simenon’s seventh entry in the chronicles of Detective show more Chief Inspector Maigret. Our favorite stolid commissaire must leave his Parisian office, his stove, his sandwiches, and his dutiful wife for the doubtful comforts of the French countryside when a Belgian diamond merchant turns up dead in baffling circumstances at the Three Widows’ Crossroads.

Part of Simenon’s childhood was spent in occupied Belgium during the First World War. The war years taught him much about human nature, and one of his biographers quotes him as saying, “In the first place everyone cheated...my father cheated, my mother cheated, everyone cheated."

This could be the epigram for “The Night At the Crossroads,” an entertaining mystery featuring colorful characters who all have something to hide. From the fussy and self-important insurance agent who reports the crime to the garrulous backslapper who owns the gas station and garage to the reclusive Dane with the glass eye who loses his cool only in the presence of his sister who can shift from childlike to alluring — no one is precisely who they appear to be.

Maigret mysteries, at least the ones I’ve read so far, are often melancholy affairs in which the Detective Chief Inspector serves as an impartial arbiter in tragedies of regret and loss, his very neutrality a foil for the bleakness of the human condition.

This one is frankly funny, and so I recommend it to anyone who wants lighter fare in their detecting. Even the stoic Maigret seems to be hiding an annoyed grin as he feels his way slowly but surely through the smoke everyone’s blowing in his face toward a truth as absurd as it is satisfying.
