Short biography
Sir Maurice Powicke became Regius Professor of Modern History at the University of Oxford in 1928, and held that position for nearly 20 years. He was President of the Royal Historical Society from 1933 to 1937. He was considered an innovator in his time for utilizing European scholarship in his teaching and writing of history, as well as his more empathetic approach to his subjects. He was a prolific author and was noted for his skills as a teacher, which helped make Oxford the preeminent university in the field of medieval history. He was knighted in 1946.
