I loved this movie as a teenager. On watching it now, 40 years later, I realize I was dragging too much information into it from the book. Without the book to fill in the blanks (since it''s been too long since I read it), the movie has vast plot holes. Acting and cinematography are good or great, but the lack of sense in the storyline makes this silly and unenjoyable.
2021 movie #131. 1975. Gene Hackman is great it this neo noir story of a PI looking for a runaway 16-yo (Melanie Griffith). The story gets pretty complicated (as noirs often do) and keeps us (and Hackman's character) guessing as to what's really going on right up to the end.
2023 movie #153. 1971. An American getaway driver (Scott) now retired in Portugal, decides to take one last job, delivering a prison escape to France. Started off strong, and Scott is good in this, but kind of petered out in the end.
2026 movie #42. 1977. Survivors of a nuclear war attempt to drive cross country in an enormous land vehicle. Expected to be a SF blockbuster, the movie got killed by Star Wars and nobody noticed it. The vehicle cost Fox $300K to build. It wasn't a very good movie. Star Trek score: 1. Paul Winfield, one of the survivors, played Captain Terrell in Star Trek II. Poor Winfield, in Star Trek he died from and alien bug in his brain. In this movie he was eaten by killer cockroaches.
