This book provided a fascinating and detailed history of Schiaparelli's rise to become one of the most talented and creative fashion designers of the early 20th century. Lots and lots of photos of her amazing designs, the use of unusual fabric, buttons, trims, embroidery, and shoes, too. Loved the photos and the descriptive captions. Unfortunately, the captions were often direct quotes from the very dense text, so there was a lot of repetition. Also, the photos and captions were inserted in show more the text somewhat randomly, so not always on the same page as the actual context. And the font size was very small - literally this was not an easy book to read ass the tiny font size contrasted with the large page size. It was not only a coffee table sized book, it was as heavy as a coffee table! Probably 25-30 lbs. and 10.5" x 13.5" - Where was the graphic designer and an editor?
Despite my complaints there were several excellent aspects that kept me reading. In addition to describing the business of French couture, the book described the ups and downs of fashion during the war years, how Schiaparelli's couture transitioned to the US and Britain, plus the influence art had on her designs. (i.e. photography of Man Ray, paintings of Dali). show less

- Marie Cuttoli. show less
