The Buffalo Hunters by Gary McCarthy was a run-of-the-mill Western about Tom, young man who comes west to search for buffalo. It is the late 1880s and wild buffalo appear to belong to the past. He is on commission from Will Bill Cody who needs a buffalo bull for his herd. He is also charged to find a herd so that a rich man can gather his friends and come west for a hunt.
With many an adventure he searches the wilds of Wyoming and gets involved with the plight of the Indians who are suffering show more on the government reservations. He also meets and joins up with Sally, a young thief and pickpocket. Sally and Tom work well together and love soon blossoms. They help the Indians and try to do the right thing.
I am a fan of Westerns but this one didn’t really work very well. The writing was very simple and predictable. And there was a problem with the publishing as many pages were repeated making it difficult to keep your place. show less

What a fun read. I didn't want to put it down and I need to find the other books in the series. I'm hoping to find paperback copies because I know most of the men in my life would love the dime store western romp that this was.
This is a historical fiction book that attempts to follow exploration and development of the Grand Canyon through the eyes of one character. Some (Most) of the people are real though I wasn't able to tell if William Dunn's story was historically accurate or if it was a construct the author used to tell the story of the Grand Canyon.
William endures many hardships: the expedition, leaving the expedition to help his friend, their deaths, fleeing the Paiutes, losing Josie, losing Kate. In the show more end, he reunites with his first love, who manages to find him through newspaper articles. show less

This book is a western story of the usual type. To make things different, the unlikely hero is greatly overweight and wears a derby hat. You won't find any young maiden in distress. There are bits of humor, but the book holds no big surprises. Okay for a short read if you can get over the errors. I never did learn the Sherriff's name. It seemed to be interchangeable.
