This was really interesting, in that it presented an album JMC created for her sister. Things I don't get: why did they rearrange the images in it? And why didn't they proofread it? Or did the printers really screw up? Many of the images are obviously incorrectly identified (by obvious, I mean that old man in the image is not Mrs anybody), and I think that the image of JMC herself has been reversed. She has an obvious facial mole that is on the opposite side of her face in this book when show more compared to others I'm looking at. Wierd. Disappointing. show less
Comprehensive and informative, but suffers from crude reproduction of illustrations and rather too many of Ovenden's own, rather shabby, overtly eroticised images.
The three Victorian illustrators are: Richard Doyle, Eleanor Vere Boyle, William Stephen Coleman. Basically this is a book of color illustrations reproduced in dull, muddy gray-tones. There is maybe, at most, 5 pages of text and 5 pages of color illos but I'm probably overestimating. So don't buy this one for information and the illos are terrible. You're better off buying the actual works by these illustrators rather than waste your money only to be subjected to the hash this publisher has show more made of them. Truly disappointing in every aspect. show less
