Pietrangeli, Carlo. - Archaeologist, art historian, museologist, Romanist ( Rome 1912 - to 1995). Inspector and then superintendent of museums, monuments, galleries and excavations of the City of Rome (1938 - 77) and then (from 1978) Director General of Monuments, museums and galleries and its papal restoration laboratory, he worked first for the reorganization and restoration of various museums and Roman monuments, then the value of all the collections of the Vatican, where especially intense was his activity in the field of restoration: under his guidance have been restored to its original splendor famous works, including the Sistine Chapel (completed in 1994) and the Chapel of the Holy of Holies in Laterano (completed in 1995). He was Papal honorary academic (1982), a member of the National Lincei (1993) and president (1974-83, 1991-95) of the Pontifical Roman Academy of Archaeology. The author of numerous scientific papers, the most significant of which were collected in the book Selected Writings of Charles Pietrangeli (1995, with bibliography), he also directed (since 1973) the series Churches of Rome illustrated and conceived and directed that the Guides rionali of Rome.
