- My childhood imaginary friend and the wild fiction stories I wrote early in life pretty much sealed my future fate as a writer. I've been a TV news reporter, PR specialist, freelance writer, and now, I write books for children. My first fiction series, Julep O'Toole, was released by Penguin and Aladdin publishes my Secrets of a Lab Rat series. Both series' are for middle grade readers. On the nonfiction side, I've written more than 70 titles, on everything from storm chasing to video gaming. My publishers include Scholastic, Marshall Cavendish, and The Child's World. I've been married for 25 years to my college sweetheart, Bill, a high school photography teacher. I love photography, art, and napping with my 18-pound ragdoll cat, Kira. This book is a fine primer on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, providing a brief biographical sketch of MLK, some historical context for his fight for racial equality, and some details about how people may honor MLK on the national holiday in his honor. The book is complete with photographs of King and supporters. There is a short (one line) mention of his assassination, which I just skipped over when I read this book to my class of toddlers (who were none the wiser that they missed anything and show more are too little to grasp such a concept). All in all, this a helpful book to educate children on an important figure from our recent past. show less
An enjoyable adventure - especially for kids, but I found it to be an easy and entertaining read for me as well. Trueit also does an amazing job of research to bring new techolonogy and science into these novels. She highlights the adventure but in doing so offers problem solving skills, team work, and friendship as models - again especially for young readers.
This book was given to me to read by the librarian at the elementary school I work at. I am often asked to do this in order for them to better monitor the books that our library receives and to make sure the books are appropriate for the age groups who will be checking them out.
I have to be honest and admit I wasn't looking forward to reading this one. Overall, on first appearances it seems to be intended for a very young audience and I wasn't holding out much hope that there would be any show more real depth to the book beyond "who our besties will be this week." I ended up being VERY surprised with this one.
The main character, Julep, is a typical, awkward 11 year old who is desperately trying to fit in. She envies the other kids in her class at school, all of whom have cell phones, SE (self expression) tees, and manageable hair while her mother is trying so hard to make her realize she doesn't need to be like everyone else. I loved how the author really has shown the struggle of every school-aged girl to fit in while trying to be independent and true to themselves and the dysfunctional relationship we often have with our mothers at that age.
The book is actually going on my "must purchase" list for when my daughter is a little older. It was cute, but not too cute, relevant to today's preteens, and written in a manner that will draw the young reader into the story. show less

A fitting end to this series for pre-teens, early teens. Cruz and his friends must find the final piece of the puzzle to solve the cipher and unlock its secrets. Bur time is not on their side as they struggle to finish out the classwork for the year, race against the mysterious Nebula, and try to uncover the spy in their midst. And as they get closer to the goal, the more dangerous things become. Trueit has a very readable writing style and through the series of books her characters have show more grown together like a family. The characters are complex and realistic and the mix of geography, biology and other sciences with futuristic technology makes this adventure series even more compelling. In addition, at the end of each book are short articles on the science upon which much of the plot is based. It is both a good read and an educational one. I thoroughtly enjoyed this series! show less
