The American fur trade in the Far West; a history of the pioneer trading posts and early fur companies of the Missouri Valley and the Rocky Mountains and of the overland commerce with Santa Fe by Hiram Martin Chittenden
An interesting book in ways I didn't expect. In many ways this is a business history, but it's a business history populated by unusually interesting characters.
It's also quite quirky, and quite long. But it rewards working through the quirks.
