'Seeds' is about Darwins natural selection and how it has been overtaken by high-tech plant breeding which in essence accelerates evolution. The book focuses on new food crops that are resistant to pests and diseases, and are bred to contribute significantly to our future food supply. This evokes quintessential questions. Who is actually in charge on this planet? Nature? Human beings? A god? Should humans stop interfering with evolution and go back to the authenticity of small-scale farms show more and city farming? I read this book in 2 hours, while riding the train.
The writing style is less pleasant than that of his newer books, but the message is worth reading anyway. Bas Haring takes us on a philosophical trip to unravel the definition, ideas, beliefs and meaning of the word 'success', making us less susceptible to the rat race of life in the progress.

Dit boekje, Kaas en de evolutietheorie geleend van mijn zusje die het een keertje gewonnen had. De evolutie word er op een simpele en heldere manier uitgelegd en voor wie er nog niets vanaf weet is het vast heel leerzaam. Maar, en hier zit meteen de grootste maar van dit boek, iemand met biologie in zijn of haar pakket die op het punt staat eindexamen te doen leert er niets van. Die weet dit allemaal al. Ik las dat het voor YA door moet gaan, maar ik denk dat zij vaak al op de show more hoogte zijn van de evolutietheorie. Ik heb althans niet het gevoel gehad dat ik iets nieuws heb geleerd erover. (Of toch, konijnen schijnen een paar kilometer te kunnen zwemmen). Verder vond ik dat er wel erg veel herhaalt werd in het boek. Had van mij ook wel iets minder gemogen. show less
