I really like this book for many reasons. For an informational book it is not really overwhelming for younger readers. The size of the book helps with this I think. The book is broken down into animals with tusks, sky, land, sea, natural weapons, and so on. It has pictures of the animals but only points out a few things about their bodies that are intesting. There are not lines going everywhere telling you every bone and muscle of the animal. I also like that when they are introducing an show more animal it says a characteristic about the animal. For example the bats are introduced "Thirst for blood." This book would be fun for kids to look up one of their favorie dangerous animal and write a story including some of the things they learned from the book. show less

I adore this book! Sometimes, when I'm sick or bored, I'll pick it up and just read through it. Sad, yes, but I know a ton more about animals than I ever though I would.
The back cover says, "Mammals are our closest relatives in the animal kingdom." In fact, we are mammals in the animal kingdom. In spite of that mistake, this is a nice illustrated book with close relatives, food, young, habitat, and classification all mentioned.
Humans have always relied heavily on animals. We have worshipped them, befriended them, sacrificed them, domesticated them, eaten them, hunted them, drawn them, and written about them. We have come to appreciate them, especially in their natural habitats, as an essential part of our world. They are creatures that deserve our respect and reward our curiosity. As intrinsic as they are to the ecological balance of our world, animals are under threat from their human admirers, and in dire need show more of our help. Habitat destruction spells disaster for many species, leaving them teetering on the brink of extinction. Only through a greater understanding of the fragile balance that exists between species and their habitats will it become possible for us to ensure the survival of our precious wildlife heritage. This comprehensive encyclopedia presents a wide-ranging survey of four major groups of living things: mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. The text is written by a team of international experts in the zoological sciences. It is carefully constructed to be read and appreciated by everyone with an interest in natural history.
