Still a definitive text on the subject. In the fifty-five years since this was first published, various scholars have added more to the information or disproven various elements, or shown slightly more complex understandings of Shakespeare's relationship with his culture. Yet no-one has achieved anything as solid as Bullough's eight-volume masterpiece. A tremendous scholarly tome.
