Prior to reading this I had no real thoughts about the wolf. The wolf was just a character is many of the stories I've read over my life: Little Read Riding Hood, werewolf novels, etc. They are always portrayed as cunning, vicious creatures that kill off livestock and children. This small collection of short stories and essays brings to life another story. Wolves are smart, loyal, integral to our environment and thanks to years of misunderstanding and free reign of hunters, they are close to show more extinction. Most states have less than 50 wolves left and what few that have survived have to fear angry farmers and hot head hunters. This collection puts together another side of the coin, by showing just how majestic and smart they are it begs the reader to question: why are criminalizing these animals. An eye opening and beautiful collection. I for one will never look at wolves the same again. show less
I bought this when I was writing "The Windwater Pack" and repeatedly referenced it throughout the first draft. I use the photos as reference for art work as well. The book, small as it is, is wonderful and is one I won't get rid of any time soon. It's easy to look up details - such as the fact some wolves do have blue eyes all their lives, though I didn't keep this trait for the character I used it for and the lifespan of wild and captive wolves. In short, if you want to write a book about show more wolves and use facts, this will help you a lot. show less
This is a really solid overview of what we know about wolves today. It covers just about every aspect of the wolf--anatomy and physiology to social behaviors and the various ways humans interact with wolves. If you're looking for a broad and informative overview, this is what you should pick up.
Filled with stunning photography, all aspects of the cougar's life are discussed in a comprehensive and understandable format. This is the must-have book for lovers of this majestic feline.
