I love Angela, and she sings and dances as well as ever, and gives the very poor script as much care as any other, but the movie is a loser. The songs are not memorable, the dance numbers are okay but standard, and the script is miserable.
The writers tried to replicate a Dickensian oppressed-orphan tear-jerker with Suffragettes attempling to replicate the Newsies (of another movie), and a foundation of self-centered neurosis for several characters.
Maybe it could have worked with some show more dramatic subtlety, and a less bathetic resolution - but it doesn't. show less
