En yleensä tykkää aloittaa sarjan lukemista keskeltä, mutta Karl Axel Björkin tutkimusten osa 8 tempaisi kuitenkin mukaansa juhannuksenvietton keskeyttäneiden kuolemien tutkintaan.

En tiedä vuosituhannen lopusta, mutta ainakin nykyään yliopistomaailmaan sijoittuvat rakkaustarinat alkavat olla kulunut aihe suomalaisessa kirjallisuudessa. Tämä tosin on alansa parhaimmistoa ja herätti ajatuksia vuosituhannen lopun suomalaisuudesta ja onnesta. En ihan ymmärtänyt epilepsia-motivaatiota - miksi se oli päähenkilölle niin raskas asia ja miten se erotti hänet muista, "normaaleista"? Itse en ole koskaan pitänyt epilepsiaa elämää hallitsevana sairautena. Vaikeahan show more sitä on ulkopuolisena ymmärtää, mutta olisin toivonut, että aihetta käsittelevä kirja olisi paikannut ymmärtämättömyyden aukkoni. Nyt jäi päällimmäiseksi tunne, että päähenkilön "erilaisuus" kumpusi kuitenkin lopulta jostain ihan muusta kuin sairaudesta, ehkä persoonallisuudesta? Tämän kummastuksen lisäksi jä ärsyttämään päähenkilön pyhimysmäisyys. Toisaalta henkilö tuntui aidoilta "täydellisyydestään" huolimatta. show less

Oma arvio: Teosta mainostetaan trilleriksi, mutta mielestäni se on kaukana siitä. Hämeen-Anttila kirjoittaa hyvin ja teksti on selkeää, mutta se ei herätä suuria tunteita. Olisin kaivannut enemmän tietoa kirjan henkilöistä. Monet hahmoista jäivät hieman ontoiksi. Henkilöt kehittyvät kirjan edetessä, mutta jotain jää silti puuttumaan. Juoni on sinänsä jännittävä, mutta loppu tulee liian nopeasti ja se on ennalta-arvattava. Liian helppi loppu pilaa mielestäni muuten show more monin paikoin toimivan juonen. I read the book because it was supposed to have some references to roleplaying in it. As it turned out, the roleplaying references were very few and far between, but the book was enjoyable, nonetheless. If anyone else is thinking about reading the book due to the live action roleplaying in it, I wouldn't bother. The larping represented in the book is nowhere near today's Finnish idea of it, it is more like the writer's proto-larping vision. But enough about that.

The book revolves about a show more group of 40-somethings, who were best friends in high school, but have since grown apart. All are now successful in their own right, as someone starts sending them threatening letters in the form of riddles written on tarot cards. The book describes the characters solving these riddles and trying to figure out how to deal with their oppressor.

The story goes forward pretty well with the different threats and riddles moving it along with a nice pace, after the first 30-40 pages or so. The beginning was very slow, pretty boring, and it centered around the weakest character in the book. But I would advice to read on, because the rest of the book is much better. The characters are nicely rounded, very humane, and interesting (with the exception of the character introduced first), and I could identify with many of them and their motives.

The writing was easy to read, but nothing remarkable. The riddles were interesting in themselves, filled with a hodge-podge of different religions and mythic references. Some readers might even wish to try to solve the riddles before the characters solve them. I believe that it is possible with the clues given in the book, though I did not bother with it myself.

All in all, a pretty nice read, but it did not compel me to read more books by the same author. show less
