2036 A History of the Council of Trent Volume I: The Struggle for the Council, by Hubert Jedin translated from the German by Dom Ernest Graf, O.S.B. (read 1 Dec 1986) This was published in German in 1949 and in English in 1957. It is solid and great work. This volume ends with the opening of the Council on 13 Dec 1545 at Trent. It is not a happy story - the 25 year delay in getting the Council opened. Jedin feels that if it had been held 20 years earlier the religious map of Europe would be show more far different today. One cannot be impressed by Clement VII, who did all he could to avoid calling a Council. And of course Paul III has grievous faults. This is a good book and I look forward to reading Volume II, which will actually deal with the Council--this book only tells of the struggle to get it opened. show less

2037 A History of the Council of Trent Volume II: The First Sessions at Trent 1545-47, by Hubert Jedin translated from the German by Dom Ernest Graf, O.S.B. (read 6 Dec 1986) This volume covers the time from the opening of the Council until March 12, 1547, when the Council left Trent for Bologna, under the claim plague had appeared in Trent. This is a good book, though the treatment of justification was heavy going and I'm afraid I did not get too much out of it. One is surprised anew at the show more small number of bishops who attended--never as many as 100. Cervini and Del Monte were the principal legates--Reginald Pole was the third but he was often absent. Cervini of course became Marcellus Ii and Del Monte Julius III. This account is very even-handed, and I can see why a Protestant college would put it in its library. I don't know if there are any more volumes in English. [And I have never read any or heard that such exist]. show less

1804 Ecumenical Councils of the Catholic Church: An Historical Survey, by Hubert Jedin (read 26 Oct 1983) This book was published about 1960. It is a good study of the Councils, though more abbreviated than the book by Philip Hughes which I read in September of 1974. This was well worth reading.
