Reading this, with its redolent descriptions of restaurants and the foods served at that time period, is a time capsule of New Orleans just before the 1970s. The recipes themselves, if you are watching your diet for any reason, are judiciously usable.
This cookbook not only contains some excellent historical recipes known throughout New Orleans and served in the historic Brennan's restaurant (known for its creole cuisine) but also a history of the Brennan family. This is the 1964 edition I found at a bookstore near New Orleans several years ago and I have found that there have been several revised editions in subsequent years. I don't know what has changed in new volumes but this edition contains a lot of excellent recipes, most of which show more are not overly difficult to make. In fact many, if not most, of the recipes are fairly simple. I haven't tried all of them but the ones I have tried turned out excellently. show less
