The ancient One Land had been broken into six warring fragments. And in Lamath, one of those fragments, Seagryn was getting married to the lovely Elaryl. The problems that beset the Land couldn't have bothered him less. Then suddenly, he turned into a savage beast, a monstrous tugolith.

He was a wizard, a magic user in Lamath, where magic was anathema! And shortly thereafter, he was an outcast, and marriage to Elaryl was forever forbidden. From then on, things grew difficult for the new show more powershaper.

Sheth, the mightiest wizard of all, soon became his enemy. Dark, the boy whose prophecies were always accurate, involved him in the Conspiracy to create a dragon that would ravage the land. And somehow, despite his power and good intentions, things never worked out as Seagryn intended!

The Imperial House of Chaomonous was awake again. For a thousand years, while the two-headed dragon barred magic from the Golden Kingdom, the castle had slept. But now the dragon is dead, and the castle has awoken.

The throne has been usurped by Queen Ligne, while the rightful heir, Princess Bronwynn, has been locked in the dungeons. And now, to make matters worse, brutal slaver Admon Faye has invaded its lower depths.

The realm of Lamath is in great tumult. But where is the powershaper, the show more wizard of ancient magic who could understand its warnings? Only Pelmen, former Prophet of Lamath, has the ability to restore peace to the land. But he is far away, rehearsing a play to flatter the tyrannical Queen with a troupe of actors.

For the Imperial House and Princess Bronwynn, Pelmen may be the only hope left. But can he answer their prayers in time?

Meanwhile, prisoners of the vicious Queen are sent to the dungeon and never return. With Lamath on the brink of war, the former Prophet Pelmen is faced with his greatest challenge yet!

I stumbled across this recently in a used book store. I'd never heard of the book or the author before, but this was fairly good. There are some different ways of presenting standard fantasy elements here, and the writing is good. Its not the best fantasy written durng the late 70's, but its not bad either. Its a bit lighter on fighting and 'flash bang' wizardry than is typical for books from that time, which makes it a bit distincitve.
Pelmen the Powershaper was in over his head in trouble. Trouble was nothing new to him, but this time it was too much. His beloved Serphimera had left him without a word of farewell. His old rival, the sorceress Mar-Yilot, had vowed to kill him and his friend Dorlyth mod Karis.

Ngandib-Mar, seat of the Power that Pelmen obeyed, was on the brink of bitter internal war, and Chaomonous was again threatening to invade. Even the formerly peaceful tugoliths were marching into Ngandib-Mar to wreak show more slaughter and destruction.

Now, young Rosha mod Dorlyth was trying to get into the High Fortress to confront the evil sorcerer Flayh, who controlled it. It seemed that some dark Nemesis was dogging Pelmen's footsteps, and there was nothing he could do about it. He did the only thing he could. He headed into the trouble.
