This ambitious, largely autobiographical novel opens at the turn of the century with the story of a young Dutchman growing up on the island of Java, and ends against the backdrop of the growth of fascism in Europe in the 1930s. It encompasses the lives and loves of the author's colorful acquaintances - whole identities are often only thinly disguised - including the European writers Pascal Pia and Andre Malraux.
