In my opinion this series just keeps getting better and more under my skin. Our heroes have to battle politicians and the mysterious protomolecule and stay alive, there are a lot of people doing things that are sometimes morally dubious and often for good reasons. It made me want to read more of the books, and to see the next season.
Residents of a small town turn into psychotic killers/pseudo-zombies.
The first act is actually pretty good. It's purely a horror movie at that point, and although I haven't seen enough serious horror movies to have a good basis of comparison, my wife and I thought it was pretty scary. And it gets its scares though suspense, not cringe-inducing violence (which would have been an easy way to go with the scenario). But then it turns into an action movie, and everything kind of falls apart. It show more becomes predictable, and although it's still directed as if it's a horror movie (lots of sudden loud noises and people jumping out of corners), it's not and it's just not scary anymore. The protagonists have suddenly become action heroes, with all the understood invulnerability that comes with that. The really good thing about this movie is when it gets bad, it gets really bad, and you can get some laughs at its expense. Luckily we happened to be the only two in the theater, so we could heckle all we liked - otherwise, it might have been pretty painful to sit through.

Based on a Dirk Pitt novel by Clive Cussler. The movie starts with a Civil War Confederate iron side escaping to Africa with bounty of gold coins. When then move to modern day where the WHO is investigating an outbreak in Niger. The WHO doctor is ambushed by assassins and then saved by Dirk. Dirk gets a Confederate gold coin from an underworld broker, sending him up the Niger River looking for the iron side. The WHO doctors go with them. Mayhem ensues as those responsible for the outbreak show more try to stop them.
I enjoyed the movie. As is often the case, I'm glad I read the book before I watched the movie though. show less
