Gunnar Ekelöf (1907–1968)
Author of Dikter
About the Author
As others have observed, Ekelof is a poet who deserves much wider recognition: "Ekelof is a poet of surprising stature, one of the masters of modern poetry, yet little known in America" (LJ). Contributing to his obscurity outside Sweden is that few writers of his eminence are more difficult to show more characterize, for the poetry that began to appear in 1932 was an extremely personal, evolving investigation of human consciousness and culture. For Ekelof, a twentieth-century mystic, all things, people, and ideas form a complex interdependent unity; the past is in the present, and reality for the poet is his changing inner visions. The strength and genuineness of Ekelof's often bleak voice won him immense popularity in Sweden as well as almost all Scandinavian literary awards. In his late works, Diwan over the Prince of Emgion (1965) and The Tale of Fatuhmeh (1966), Ekelof expertly drew from medieval Greek and Middle Eastern literature to create a mystical and visionary search, while and by means of suffering, for essential human experience.
