I was surprised by how much I liked this one. It shied away from the gratuitous shock and lol-so-random nonsense of some bizarro lit.

I would have liked, actually, to see this world expanded.

UGH. Gratuitous graphic violence just for the sake of violence.
Not my cup of tea.

I had to DNF at 20%. I think this could have made a fantastic movie, but as a book, it started out interesting (if a bit too reminiscent of a favorite movie, right from the beginning), and then varied between feeling boring and built for shock value, with a fair amount of middle-school-boy humor thrown in that didn't really feel believable of high school kids or remotely entertaining. The further I read, the more annoyed I became and the more predictable it all felt.

Just not for me.

There is something for every horror fan here whether you enjoy dark satire, straight up gross out horror, or psychological terror. Beginning with The "League of Zeroes" which takes the art of body modification to blood curdling extremes and ending with the novella "The Sleep Of Judges" which was an unsettling tale of the aftermath of a burglary. In between is a wild ride of love, desperation and how to survive the end of the world just like the cockroaches will. This was my first time reading anything by Jeremy Robert Johnson, who in my humble opinion is a master story teller. This was an incredible collection of dark fiction/horror stories.

I received an advance copy for review
