Until this movie, I had no idea how hot Cate Blanchett was and I'ld never seen Rooney Mara in anything. But they are both gratifyingly hot. The movie is extremely well shot and very moody. In the end it's a slight movie in which almost nothing of consequence really happens, but it is very moving.

A girl falls in love with a married woman.

I had very high expectations for this movie, and ended up disappointed. The acting and the visuals are great. But despite being exceptionally well-written, it never quite managed to make me care enough to have any emotional investment.

A word rendition of a book which focuses on theme when it should be focusing on plot. Second act is much better than the first.

Carol est un film réussi, bien plus abouti que Far from heaven (tourné 13 ans plus tôt) qui traitait d'une thématique similaire : celle du carcan des conventions sociales dans les États-Unis des années 50. Le focus se fait cette fois sur un coup de foudre survenant entre deux femmes issues d'un milieu social très différent.
Cate Blanchett, en grande bourgeoise, mater dolorosa et femme fatale à l'étroit dans l'existence impossible qu'elle s'est infligée au côtés d'un mari, fait show more face à une jeune comédienne parfaite, vibrante et juste, à la fois fragile et lumineuse dans la découverte d'elle-même. Rooney Mara est une belle découverte; son jeu est tellement subtil qu'elle vole un peu la vedette à son illustre partenaire. La force, la beauté et l'émotion qu'elle sait communiquer à travers un simple regard font d'elles une grande actrice.
Todd Haynes illustre plutôt habilement la domination masculine bien prégnante de l'époque, sans en faire trop. Le caractère artificiel et distancié de Far from heaven n'est heureusement pas la marque de Carol.
Mention spéciale à la belle scène d'amour entre les deux femmes. Un moment rare au cinéma. show less
