| Description | John Rodgers (1772-1838): American naval officer. He began his career as a merchant sailor, then joined the reformed American navy in 1798. He served in the Quasi-War with France and in the War of 1812. In both wars, his service was distinguished, but he fought no great battles and did not win great fame. He became the senior American naval officer and served in important administrative posts almost until his death. |
