2.) In Nore Yamakazi's series The Ancient Magus' Bride, Matthew is the devoted husband of Mina, a frail young woman living some centuries before Chise. An alchemist comes to the village, and tells Matthew that cats really do have nine lives, and that by killing numerous cats, he can make a potion that will give Mina good health. The alchemist is not named at this time, but it is Cartaphilus. Mina is forced to drink the potion, but it destroys her. A distraught Matthew thinks that perhaps he can restore her by killing more cats, but he himself is killed by the King of the Cats. The two become a blight of evil, which the King seals at the cost of his life. In Chise's time, the seal is giving way. She is able to enter it, and Mina begs her to erase them and free them into the cycle of life and death, which she does.
