RA: Exciting and Potentially Spooky Reads for 4th grade advanced reader

WaMDad: This choice might dive into fantasy a little too strongly, but the characters or so strong and the story is so well written that I need to recommend it. This is a story about uncovering a plot, saving innocent children, travelling far for the people we love, and alternate universes!

WaMDad: The first in a series, this book tells the story of a group of children attending a mysterious school and learning a secret of world-shattering consequence! This book has intrigue, teamwork, and finding family through friendship.

WaMDad: If you want to try something a little scarier, I definitely recommend this classic collection of spooky tales. The stories are all old folk tales retold for modern kids. Things don't get violent, but if you are looking to get spooked by a book, this is the one that will do it!

WaMDad: This might be a little past your current reading interests, but you did mention loving 'Guts' and other slice-of-life books about school. This one has a 13 year-old protagonist who attends a private all-girls' school for spies! There is some romance, but it is light and age-appropriate.

WaMDad: Written by the same author as 'A Brand New Boy', 'Skellig' is an excellent introduction to magical realism. During a time of strife and turmoil, a boy finds a friend in a strange creature hiding in his garage. I think you'll like this story - it is a little spooky, but it also has a big heart.

WaMDad: You said you really like 'The Name of This Book is Secret' from when you competed in OBOB. This is the sequel to that book, so if you haven't read this one yet, I definitely recommend it. Just like the first in the series, it is mysterious, spooky, and a little goofy.

WaMDad: You mentioned enjoying a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' book and this one has a fantastical story told on Earth. Because of the multiple storylines, they also take longer to read - it may take more than one reading session to finish this one.
